Molly Wilson, a newspaper crime reporter and TV commentator, thinks it might be time to break up with her homicide detective boyfriend, Cliff Hooper. When he fails to show up for their date, she drives to his home, ready to break the news, only to find that he's been murdered.

Walt Sydowski, a veteran with the SFPD Homicide Detail and his partner Linda Turgeon arrive at the scene and begin an investigation, but, before they get far, another homicide detective is killed. San Franciscans are unnerved by the two murders and the homicide department is grief-stricken at so much loss in such a short period. As the investigation progresses, the obvious link between the two men turns out to be that each had a romantic relationship with Molly.

At the same time, Tom Reed, the ace crime writer in the San Francisco Star's newsroom, begins his own investigation into the murders. His connection to the case is also personal. He and Molly have worked side-by-side for years and are close friends.

Mofina's use of both a reporter and a detective allows him to take us into two different yet complementary worlds, adding depth and texture to the story. Sydowski and Reed are both engaging characters and the supporting cast is equally well-drawn. As a San Francisco resident, I was worried that someone living in Ottawa would have a hard time with the arcane details of our city. I was delighted to find that Mofina had really done his homework. Each of the characters lives in the neighborhood they would choose, and his descriptions of the Bay Area are right on the money.

This is a tight, entertaining story, suspenseful enough to keep me reading until way past my bedtime. My only quarrel with the book is the ending. It's way too derivative of too many bad action adventure movies to be at all satisfying. But that's a minor quibble indeed given how engrossing I found the rest of the story.
