Charley Van Leeuwen has finally found the man of her dreams and married him in just six weeks. Coming from a wealthy background, she is accustomed to men using her to get to her money, but has found Jack Fairfax is not interested in her money. He seems to love her and is tall, dark, and handsome. His background is that he was in the Navy and was trained as a meteorologist. He seems too good to be true. Is there a catch?

Not telling all her friends of her special marriage, Charley arrives back in San Francisco with Jack to discover a dead woman in their hotel bathtub. To add to this problem, Charley's cousin, Cece has disappeared and might be kidnapped.

Charley's uncle Harry is wonderfully protective to the point of being a pain. Harry definitely has suspicions about Jack and discovers by investigating into his background, that Jack had never done anything interesting except for being near "interesting places at interesting times." In Harry's words: "So your boy's too sharp to be that dull."

Being the director of a new play at the Rep, Charley's theater, keeps Charley's mind off Cece's possible kidnapping and Jack. However, when Jack becomes involved in delivering the ransom, Charley has to follow. She needs to know who he really is and what he really he capable of doing. Also, Jack doesn't respond to anything about his mysterious past.

This wonderful story has the voice of real characters. They are each funny and tragic in their own individual ways. Margaret Dumas is obviously gifted in watching people and knowing their personalities. As you read SPEAK NOW, you are with the characters and understand their actions and reactions. Of course, some people are not who they really seem to be.

SPEAK NOW was short-listed for the 2003 CWA Debut Dagger award and is a fast-paced engrossing novel that keeps you wondering and thoroughly enjoying the personality of Charley. I foresee that this could be the beginning of a series.
