Judge Pazair is in a prison camp in the desert. His name is not included in the prison files and no one knows he is there. An unknown enemy has accused him of murdering his boss and has hidden him away without a trial. Pazair is frustrated by his fate and decides to escape. His wife Neferet and his blood brother Suti have found evidence that proves his innocence. They force the Justice to issue a pardon and allow Pazair to reclaim his position in society.

Judge Pazair is grateful for his release; however, he still wants to find his boss' murderer. Someone framed Pazair for the murder in the hope that he would not investigate the crime. As this does not work, the conspirators begin to threaten Pazair and his family. Pazair does his best to protect himself and those around him by having trusted friends fill important roles in the city government. This move is not enough to stop his enemies. Additional bodies begin to appear and omens threaten the Pharaoh's reign. Pazair, with the assistance of Neferet, Suti and Kem must fight for justice and protect the Pharaoh.

The main characters of SECRETS OF THE DESERT are not typical stock characters. Neferet is a talented doctor with a life of her own. She loves her husband and works to balance her career with his own. Kem is a bodyguard-type figure. Kem is not a well-developed character, but he is memorable due to his assistant Killer. Killer is a trained killer baboon and seems almost human. Suti is not the most pleasant character simply because he is a womanizer and somewhat cocky. His role and behaviors are necessary to the book - they are just not something I liked. Judge Pazair is laid-back but firmly believes in justice. He is very concerned about the rights of people, but he does not seem overly passionate about anything.

SECRETS OF THE DESERT is the second book in THE JUDGE OF EGYPT series. While certain elements of the book do not make sense immediately (because they most likely relate to the previous book in the series) it is possible to read and enjoy this book on its own.
