Disgraced journalist-turned-true crime writer Frank Corso is at a gallery opening with and for his friend, photographer Meg Dougherty when police enter and tell everyone they have to leave the gallery because of a toxic spill. When they leave, they are to move south where buses will be waiting.

Meg is understandably upset. This was to be her big vernissage. But she has no choice but to obey, so she and Frank leave and head south. They get to the area between the sports stadia where the transportation is waiting and Frank puts Meg into a cab. He stays behind to do some snooping.

Corso manages to find his way into the bus tunnel from Seattle's 'Underground City.' He learns that some sort of poison gas has been let loose in the bus station under the city to the north of the gallery area. Many people are dead, lying in their own blood. What is it and why has it been unleashed on Seattle and what does it have to do with the international symposium on chemical and biological warfare currently being held at one of the Seattle hotels?

Meanwhile, Meg gets home and sees Brian, her ex-boyfriend lurking under the trees. He's the one who drugged her and covered her body with obscene tattoos. She manages to have the cab follow him when he leaves but they lose him. When she finally returns home, she finds Brian, nearly decapitated, in her kitchen. He doesn't much resemble Billy Idol any more.

Then a note is received. The bus tunnel was just a test. More terror will be unleashed on mankind in 30 hours, and by 30 days, millions of people will die. Corso and the police have a little over a day to find the terrorists and stop them.

The fourth book in the Corso series is just as exciting as the first. The Leo Waterman series (WHO IN HELL IS WANDA FUCA, and so on) was good. With the Frank Corso series, Ford has reached a new plateau. Don't wait to find the first three in the series. They can be read out of order.
