Alex Cross is back for his tenth book in the series! Ex-Washington DC detective and now FBI man, Alex once again is facing the madmen who have haunted his dreams since they managed to get away from him. Known only as The Wolf and The Weasel, these two very different killers are working together to bring death and destruction upon the populations of the world.

The Wolf is the brains behind this plan. He uses highly-trained professional mercenaries, subsidized by the Red (Russian) Mafia and fanatical Muslims to blackmail the leaders of the world's powers into releasing terrorist prisoners and giving him millions of dollars. Starting with the eradication of a small town in the US, The Wolf soon starts to bomb bridges all around the world, including Paris, New York, and London as he proves that he has the ways and the means to level cities filled with people.

Using Alex's hatred for The Weasel (who had once kidnapped Alex's fiancée) to keep him, the FBI, CIA, and other international policing agencies off balance and confused about who is really responsible for the carnage, The Wolf seems to always be one step ahead of everyone.

James Patterson expertly uses his style of short, fast-paced chapters to hook the reader's interest as we follow the world-shattering events that befall major cities. It's a page turner that won't permit you to put the book down, things are happening far too quickly for any questions to enter our heads about probability and realism.

The first chapters of this book are filled with action, thrills, and the feelings of sorrow that resonates within every person in this post 9/11 time. Along with Alex, we feel the frustration, the fear and the beginning tendrils of courage as we face a madman who shows he is capable of using any means -- including a suitcase nuclear bomb designed to kill millions to get his way and humble the powerful nations of the earth.

Unfortunately, by the middle of the book the breakneck pace slows down, and as The Wolf murders everyone that aids him in his plan, you can't help but wonder why anyone would do business with him. Soon Alex is caught up in a deep depression that slows the story down until it's almost unbearable. And then, after too many false stops and starts, the end of the story comes quickly and in a most unsatisfying way.

If you're a fan of James Patterson, you'll enjoy most of this story, but I'm sorry to say that, though LONDON BRIDGES starts out as a marvelous and brilliant book, it ends as a huge disappointment.
