Michael Driscoll's attempt to become an FBI agent is ruined by his association with his high-visibility crime syndicate family, the Driscolls in the United States and the O'Driscolls in Cork County Ireland. His overwhelming desire to help people then brings him to the Catholic Church to become a priest.

Having left his old life behind him he is now serving a dirt-poor parish in Mexico. His life is soon disrupted when he receives a desperate phone call from his ex-girlfriend, Lydia, the former love of his life, who lives in Ireland. She begs him to help her and to save Daniel but the phone connection is broken before he can find out what danger she's in - and who Daniel is.

With the reluctant permission from his Church superiors, Father Michael gets to Ireland too late. The police inform him that Lydia is dead and her son Daniel is missing - and for want of any other people involved, Michael becomes the police's prime suspect.

A suspiciously friendly female police investigator attaches herself to the handsome Michael, and when the body of little Daniel is found, she tells Michael that she believes in his innocence and offers to help him find the real killers.

Soon Michael finds out that his family from both sides of the pond have put aside their differences to work together in some sort of multi-million dollar heist and that Lydia and her son's murders were somehow a part of the illegal scheme. That's when he vows to bring them all to justice.

Author David Compton has built an engrossing and fascinating story of international crime and brutality in FAMILY SINS. Dead bodies abound and the level of brutality runs high as the members of each country's family work for their own uppermost step in the planned crime. Though the featured cyber-crime is a little iffy -- there might be more problems with collecting the wealth than Compton permits the readers to contemplate -- the overall set-up and application of the plan is well done and keeps the reader's attention thoroughly.

Filled with action and danger, well-drawn characters and deep emotions, FAMILY SINS is a fast and satisfying mystery.
