It is snowing in the small town of Scumble River and relations are very frosty between the members of the band Pink Elephant who play at many of the local functions. Skye Denison's brother Vince is in the band and she is worried about their obvious animosity causing problems when they play at the school dance, and how this will reflect on her. As she starts to comprehend what has the musicians so upset, a fire breaks out and one of the band members is murdered. Vince is one of they key suspects and Skye is determined that a proper investigation should take place in order that he is cleared.

A lot of odd things have been happening with the kids attending the school where Skye works as a psychologist, and she wonders if this might somehow be connected to the murder. Meanwhile, there is a proposal by an out of town developer to acquire a lot of land in Scumble River to build a large amusement park and this is likely to set neighbour against neighbour, perhaps fatally.

Skye has a history of helping solve murder cases in the small community, and often the local police chief, Wally, is happy to have her help. But this time is different, as he is running for mayor and his opponent points at Skye's past assistance as an indicator of Wally's incompetence. Wally's ex-wife Darleen is back on the scene too, and aware that Wally has always had a soft spot for Skye she is determined not to let her communicate with Wally on the case. Skye feels she has no option but to go it alone. The resolution is surprising but does come out of left field a bit.

MURDER OF A PINK ELEPHANT has all the right ingredients for a great cozy mystery and the author combines them into an entertaining tale. There are the usual bunch of series characters, including some great eccentrics, several suspects and plot lines to consider, and humour too.

MURDER OF A PINK ELEPHANT is the sixth book in the Skye Denison series by Denise Swanson, and this trip to Scumble River is certainly very enjoyable. Recommended.
