Dr Holly Alexander works as a Pennsylvania prison psychologist and she feels that she is carrying the weight of the world on her shoulders. One of her main responsibilities at her job is to evaluate incarcerated sexual predators that are being scheduled for parole hearings. Her voice carries a bit of clout and judging committees rely on her recommendations before granting or denying parole to an inmate.

Holly hates her job, but she feels she has no choice in the manner. She took the job as a personal penance in order to rectify wrongs done by her attorney father many years ago prior to his death. She is living an unhappy life as a divorcee and yet, she is craving male companionship. She is also looking out for her young sister whom she has been taking care of since their parents' tragic death many years ago. Beth has a substance abuse problem and has been through many forms of rehab and has a lot of contempt for her goody-two-shoes sister. Their lives will be altered in ways that neither one expects after Dr Alexander meets her next patient -- Jason Briscoe, aka The Ice-Man.

Briscoe is a clever manipulator who knows how to exploit women to exert control over them and acquiesce to his own sexual demands. He will use his charm on Dr Alexander to convince her that he was innocent of the murder of his lover. After a couple of sessions, Holly doubts his guilt and recommends him for parole.

Once she learns that she has been suckered and played for a fool she makes it her life's mission to expose Briscoe for the cold-blooded killer that he really is. They will both be playing a dangerous mind game as well as a cat-and-mouse game of their own design in order to be one up ahead of the other. They will both take a huge risk in getting what they want but in the end there can only be one victor, and the other will be paying the ultimate prize.

Ron Cutler's novel does not provide anything that one cannot find from a typical LIFETIME television movie. A supposedly smart woman does something real stupid and continues to act stupid in order to try to rectify her mistake. A man will be at the heart of her own personal mission and she will work on destroying him for making her look stupid.

Every cliché you would expect from this type of book is present throughout the novel. Someone in Holly's life will be put in extreme jeopardy, a woman craving sex bottles up her emotions, the helpful cop who is interested in getting her to bed; and of course, the inevitable showdown between Dr Alexander and Briscoe.

The author also takes too many liberties creating situations where a character would be fired, hurt, or dead had certain events happened in real life. If this is the type of book that you enjoy reading - go for it. However greater books await.
