Ex-Texas Ranger Jeremiah Spur is now leading a quiet life in Texas. He spends his time taking care of his ranch, thinking about his daughter who recently died of cancer, and feeling guilty about his wife who has put herself in a hospital to help cure her of substance abuse. The last thing on his mind is getting back with the Rangers and police work.

One day the CIA interrupts Spur's life by asking him to help solve the case of a man who vanished with $10 million dollars of his employer's money, a one Benjamin Farkas. Spur has no intention of getting back into the law enforcement world and refuses to help, but the CIA have a card up their sleeve. They tell Spur that Benjamin Farkas, who was trained as a CIA button man, asked for his help specifically.

It turns out that Farkas is a long-time friend of Spur's father. Even though Spur doesn't care much about his father since he abandoned his family when he was a child, Spur's interest is piqued, and eventually he agrees to help find the accountant.

Meanwhile, in Brenham, Texas, drug dealers are being murdered and it's up to Deputy Sheriff Clyde Thomas, the only black detective in the city, to find out who the murderer is. It just so happens that Spur and Thomas had worked together on another case and it turns out that Spur is traveling to Brenham to investigate the accountant's disappearance.

Can a missing embezzler and murdered drug dealers have anything in common? Are these two cases related? Of course they are, and part of the fun of James Hime's new book, SCARED MONEY, is finding out how.

SCARED MONEY is author James Hime's second book and it is a pure delight to throw yourself into this wonderfully-crafted, intricate mystery. The author takes the reader from Texas, to Vienna, and to Mexico in order to discover successfully the answers to all the story lines -- and there are quite a few -- all woven together in a complicated, but thoroughly understandable, web.

Mr Hime's is one of the best new writing talents that have come around in a long while. SCARED MONEY is his second book and if his third book is anything like his first two he will have fans for life.

Filled with action, taut story lines, international cities, and wonderfully strong and likeable characters, SCARED MONEY is one of the better books I've read in a long time and is not to be missed.
