Alex Kava writes a new novel inside the world of bank robberies and cons while taking a brief hiatus from her series featuring investigator Maggie O'Dell. All that was supposed to happen was a simple bank robbery that was supposed to be foolproof. Guess they forgot to read the warranty label and now the criminals are on the run and paying the price. These are not your average bank robbers.

Melanie Starks is a young mother whom, together with her teenaged son Charlie, has perfected the art of shoplifting and robbery. They have never been caught or arrested and they pride themselves on never having to use violence for their crimes. Their lives will take a nasty turn when her brother Jared gets released from prison due to a technicality and he is now looking to do a big score.

For their own personal reasons mother and son agree to assist in this caper until everything turns out horribly wrong and they are being chased by the police. What makes matters even worse is that they are holding a best-selling author as a hostage and he is meant to play a role in all of this. How are they going to get out of this mess?

ONE FALSE MOVE is a short suspense novel that goes quickly and ends that way. The story is divided into small chapters in order to hook readers and avoid them getting lost completely. One thing that was impressive was how the author tries to make Melanie into a sympathetic character even though she is still a crook. Melanie knew what she was getting into when she agreed to help her brother and now she has to live with the consequences.

The book's characters are developed as best they can considering the time frame inside the story and the amount of pages in the book. There are a couple of clever twists within the book that were hardly surprising but nevertheless entertaining. If you feel that you don't have much time to read you might want to try this one, then you can move on to something else.
