Marianne Elliot thought that she was finally safe. After having escaped from her abusive husband and feeding him to the cops, she has created a sanctuary for herself and her son on an island off the coast of Maine. She lives in constant fear that her husband, Edward Moloch will break out of prison, find her, and kill her for her betrayal.

Edward Moloch is not a nice man and all he has on his mind is vengeance. Marianne has a lot of reasons to be afraid. Something wicked this way comes and it sure ain't the circus. Moloch has escaped confinement and he has murder on his mind. Together with a motley crew of sadistic henchmen, he will leave a bloodbath in his wake filled with carnage in his quest to find his wife and his stolen 'property.' She has something that belongs to him and he wants it back, no excuses.

His trail will lead him to Dutch Island and he is ready for mayhem, but that will not be all that awaits him. A great evil has been waiting for Moloch to appear for a couple of centuries. It is waiting to send a package to him - Special Delivery and it will not take no for an answer. He is going to learn that a long-term memory is something you can never forget.

John Connolly's BAD MEN is a violent and bloody suspenseful thrill ride that is not recommended for the squeamish. What is impressive with this novel is the way that the author focuses on each one of the characters, giving each one a convincing personality. Most live on a small Maine island. Everyone knows everybody and knows how to hold an age-old secret.

The main character is Sheriff Joe Dupree, a 7ft 3" giant who acts as the town's major law enforcement on the island and lives with a heavy burden. He is one of the few original natives living on the island and he knows its history better than anyone. He senses evil coming to the island and the island does too. Moloch and his gang are filled with venom and are ready to start the slaughter. What they do not know is that vengeance is ready to be given to this bad group with something beyond their scope. An evil that is greater than them.

BAD MEN mixes a great suspense novel with some supernatural events that share some similarities with Stephen King's 1995 novel ROSE MADDER. There is a slight sense of déjà vu with the plot but that is all. Connolly's title characters are a nasty group who will whet the appetite of those who like a bit of horror with their stories. As said before, this book is definitely not for the weak of heart. If you are an avid reader and enjoy the works of Thomas Harris and/or Robert W. Walker, then look no further. You might want to add John Connolly to your library. This is a great book.
