At the age of 16 Fever Devilin left the hills of Georgia to attend college and become one of the most admired folklorist in the area. He has returned to his home near Blue Mountain to live among his former neighbors and is now known as Dr Devilin, a much respected man. Fever seems to stand out among his neighbors, not only is he big, described as nearly seven feet tall, but he also has prematurely snow-white hair and an unusual name of Fever.

Fever is enjoying this restful time while still gathering songs and folklore from the people he calls family, friends and neighbors. Fever is also fighting some ghosts from his own past. In this book he is being visited by a friend and colleague, Dr Andrews who has decided to spend his vacation with Fever.

The two doctors' vacation soon becomes short-lived when a young girl, Truevine Deveroe, who is also known as the town witch, disappears and the body of the local undertaker is discovered. The local sheriff is a close friend of Fever's and calls upon Fever for help with the case.

The locals cannot seem to come out and tell Fever certain facts but lead him along with tales and songs from their past. With a combinations of witches, ghost stories and a gruesome murder the story moves rather quickly.

I enjoyed this book greatly although I found Fever's language a bit stilted at times. Even though he was from the area he always talked extremely educated in most cases.

I am from the south and recognized many of the songs and stories Fever is told. All in all it is a very enjoyable book and I would love to read the other titles in this series.
