Torrey Tunet has just returned from a business trip. She is a translator with her home base in the small Irish village of Ballynagh. When Torrey gets off the bus, she notices a young girl apparently waiting for someone to pick her up. Upon questioning, Torrey learns that she is waiting for her Aunt Megan who works at Gwathney House. Megan O'Faolain is the housekeeper at Gwathney house and also supposed lover of its owner, John Gwathney. Torrey walks her home and discovers a dead body - John Gwathney is lying dead in his study.

Megan has already called the police; however, they have not yet arrived. Megan is the most likely suspect, but Torrey does not seem so sure. There is something about a missing manuscript and drugs that has caught her attention. Once again Torrey will get herself involved in a police investigation to satisfy her own sense of justice.

THE IRISH VILLAGE MURDER is a cozy focusing on village life. The entire book, from characters to locale to plot devices, echoes this vibe. Torrey is very sure of herself and her place in this village - even though her job frequently takes her away.

The town abounds with rumors and gossip and other small-town pettiness. Also the police, while not happy with Torrey's involvement, seem helpless to prevent her investigation. In fact, they really do not even attempt to stop or limit her investigation. In addition, this village feels as though it is safely removed from all of the problems of the world. Torrey does not expect the worst from people and seems to feel guilty when she ponders the possibility of Megan's guilt.

Like most cozies, Torrey knows more about the inter-workings of people and village life than the police. The one thing I noticed the most while reading this book was that the police might have been able to solve the murder if Torrey had shared all of the information she had, rather than hiding it from them.

THE IRISH VILLAGE MURDER is the fourth book featuring Torrey Tunet.
