Sookie Stackhouse, waitress at Merlottes in Bon Temps, Louisiana, is a telepath, which is one reason why, at 26, she has had only one boyfriend, and Bill Compton is a vampire, whose thoughts she cannot hear.

However, Bill had renewed his affair with Lorena, the vamp who brought him over, and the naive Sookie, who believes in monogamy, cannot forgive him. Bill goes to Peru to continue working on his database of vampires.

On her way home after cleaning up at the bar on New Year's Eve, Sookie spots Eric, the Sheriff of Area 5 and Bill's immediate superior in the vampire hierarchy, running in the woods, wearing only blue jeans. Sookie is suspicious because Eric always tries to hit on her, but it appears that Eric has total amnesia. Sookie takes a chance and brings Eric to her house. She has a hidden 'vampire hole' to put him in during the day, and she hopes to contact his assistants in New Orleans to help straighten all this out.

What follows is a romp through weres, and vampires, and shape shifters, and witches, and shifting loyalties and friendships, and battles for supremacy until the proper witch is found who can lift the spell placed on Eric, who returns to his own persona and tries to hit on Sookie again.

Charlaine Harris has given us another entertaining chapter in the life of Sookie Stackhouse and the residents of Bon Temps, Louisiana. May there be many more.
