Betsy Devonshire, owner of Crewel World needlecraft shop has been gaining a reputation for being able to solve murders after the police give up. This comes in handy when an up-and-coming woodcarver is murdered at a crafts fair in her hometown. Although the police feel they have an open-and-shut case against a well-known town punk, the kid's parents call upon Betsy to prove that their son didn't do the dastardly deed.

Woodcarver Robert McFey was an up-and-coming talent, who got a late start in the art world after owning a thriving business. But when he was diagnosed with a fatal illness he threw it all away to follow his dream of being an artist. This worked out well for Robert, but not at all for his new to poverty family and the business partner he left to flounder. But just before his big break, under the auspices of a famous ironwork artist, he is found with his throat cut in his tent at the local arts fair.

With the help of her large circle of needleworking friends, including the people who work in her shop, Betsy starts to investigate. In between restocking her shop, learning about new needlecraft skills, (a pattern for cutwork is found at the end of the book), and making certain her friends have her back-up, Betsy delves into the crime. The more she learns about the boy who's been arrested, the more she thinks he's guilty of theft, not murder. Then once she starts learning details about the cut-throat competitive art world the pieces of the pattern start to stitch together.

Monica Ferris, author of this needlecraft series featuring Betsy Devonshire, has constructed yet another delightful cozy. Anyone who has even taken needle to canvas will adore the people and atmosphere of this book. Betsy proves herself a down-to-earth sleuth who doesn't let her unusual talent for solving crimes go to her head. She knows she's an amateur, but does all she can when on the trail of the truth.

This book is a fun, solid murder mystery with a heaped serving of needleworld atmosphere. If you're already a fan of Betsy Devonshire, you'll enjoy this book. And for anyone who has ever loved to do needlecraft and who loves a good murder mystery, this book is for you. CUTWORK is a fun read from beginning to end and well worth the time you spend reading.
