Jack Field, a former NYPD detective, and his godson, Leon, run a dog kennel. When Dr Jamie Cutter, a part-time medical examiner, is called to examine a body at the scene of the crime, Jack drives her because her car is blocked by the debris from a storm.

They find the body of State Supreme Court Judge Merton in his car, dead from a wound in his neck. The police are unable to get to the body because a boxer, Roark, is found in the car with the judge. The police are unable to get the dog out of the car. Jack coaxes the dog out of the car with a tennis ball.

The police believe that Roark killed the judge by brutalizing his throat. Jack doesn't believe the dog killed the judge, and gets permission to house the dog in his kennels overnight. The next day he takes Roark to the local vet to keep the dog from destruction. The vet recognizes Roark and at first refuses to keep him incognito. But when he learns that Grant Goodrich is determined to put the dog to sleep, he agrees.

Ferrell Woods' ten beagles come to stay at the kennel and from Woods Jack finds information about events going on in town which help him in his investigation of the murder. Jamie and Jack continue with their investigation until they discover the identity of the killer, much to the chagrin of Sheriff Flynn.

This is a delightful book especially for all dog lovers. It is an easy read with a simple and breezy writing style. There are hilarious moments especially with the dogs. Who couldn't love the beagles and Hooch? There is a cast of characters that you can't help but love (including the dogs) and there is even a great villain in the character of Grant Goodrich who wants to rid Maine of all pit bulls, Rottweilers, and other 'vicious breeds.' The interaction between Jamie and Jack and between Jack and Leon is well written. For dog lovers there is the added bonus of discussions of Jack's dog training techniques.
