Detective Zeke Mallard is murdered in his own garage. His murder is viewed by a black man, Andrew White, who had come to Mallard's home with the same object. Mallard's partner, Richard Lanslow, a rookie detective, must solve the crime. Suspicion is directed to White, but the reader knows he is only a witness to the crime committed by the mysterious Dorian.

Searching for reasons for the murder, Lanslow discovers that Mallard had been having an affair with a beautiful young girl whose jealous lover is Andrew White. To gain an insight into the crime, Lanslow consults a fellow college teacher, Professor Jack Matthews, a noted criminologist. At his suggestion he changes his view of the suspects, with a surprising and terrifying conclusion.

This is an excellent first novel. It is an exciting police procedural with a plot that contains characters which are appealing and humorous. There is a sense of mystery about some of the characters that is difficult to comprehend. The author takes the reader into the killer's mind with an attempt to understand his motivation. The reader is carefully taken through Lanslow's investigations to the surprising and unexpected conclusion.
