Even though Christmas 2003 is past for those who celebrate, Father Tim Kavanaugh and this community transport us back to the same warm feelings I have experienced in the past seven installments. This time, Father Kavanaugh is refurbishing a battered 20-piece nativity set. This is a gift of love that will surprise his wife but this act affects many people in the community. Also, Father Tim starts to remember some of the good things about his father, not just the anger and the hurt. He revisits his childhood memories and takes the reader right back there with him.

It is important to start at the beginning of this series since the author builds on each one of the characters and their relationships. Two of the more prominent characters besides the Kavanaughs are Dooley and Hope. Dooley, a young man that seems like a son to Timothy and Cynthia, is returning for the Christmas holidays. There is still the search for the last of Dooley's siblings; four out of the five children have been located previously. Even though Dooley is not actually present that much in this story, he is amazingly important. Hope is a young bookseller, pleased with the wonderful sales for now, but wondering what her future will entail. As her name depicts, her dreams are filled with the hope of bright tomorrows.

Also included in this five set cassette tape are two short stories: ESTHER'S GIFT and THE MITFORD SNOWMEN. In the first story, Esther wants to know how much her famous marmalade cakes individually cost and when she finds out they are $43 apiece, she ponders whether she should continue. The recipe is included. In the second short story, the townspeople of Mitford are participating in a snowman-building contest.

With a solid narration by John McDonough and wonderful background music, this is a delightful selection for all Mitford fans. Jan Karon has an excellence in building and maintaining southern characters.
