Many inches of snow had fallen in Syracuse, New York. Added to this, Robin Light became centrally involved when her best friend, Cali, had her dog stolen.

Robin loves her pets and animals, in general, so there is a special tugging at her heart when something happens to Cali's dog. Robin's pet store, Noah's Ark, fills as a backdrop to this story. Murphy, Robin's husband, died and the store was all hers. The business does not deter Robin from her natural ability of sleuthing. She moonlights for a fellow named Paul Santini. Her job is to find a missing woman named Mrs Wilson. What she finds is the theme of this story.

Mr Wilson is not very much help because he drinks excessively. Robin then approaches Mrs Wilson's psychologist and also her daughter. One of the leads she receives points Robin in the right direction. When one of the key people is brutally murdered, Robin discovers that this case is not mundane and she is in the middle of a dangerous situation.

One of the main characters in this story is George, Robin's love interest. George scares people and he and Robin argue a lot. They question whether they should continue their relationship. George was Robin's husband's best friend. Just when Robin decides to stop smoking, George announces he may be moving on to others. Also, the dogs in this story play a major role. They are nicely woven into the story line.

I liked this book. It has some surprises, some romance, some kidnapping and a strong main character in Robin Light. She is a combination of one tough, gritty lady, yet she is vulnerable. The surveillance that she conducts could have been utterly boring with detail, but the excellent writing makes it a page-turner.

This is my first time to read this author and I like the way she writes. Definitely this is a book to draw you in.

This is the eighth book in the Robin Light series. The seven previous books (in order) are: CHUTES AND ADDERS, TWISTER, IN PLAIN SIGHT, THE SCENT OF MURDER, VANISHING ACT, ENDANGERED SPECIES, and BLOWING SMOKE.
