Jane Lawless is a former Kappa Alpha Sigma. She now serves on the board as an alumnus. This allows her the opportunity to give back to an organization that was important during her days at the University of Minnesota. She owns a popular restaurant that is relatively successful. Jane is also homosexual - although this her sorority never knew about. While this is not always an important issue in a book, it becomes an issue once a current sorority memberıs sexuality is announced.

While walking, Jane finds Allison Lordıs body in a river. The sorority is in an uproar especially once the police determine she was at her girlfriendıs house before leaving for the meeting where she was killed. Maggie Christopherson was one of Allisonıs best friends. Maggie never knew about Allisonıs girlfriend. This lack of trust causes Maggie to wonder what other secrets her friends are keeping from her. Not only must the sorority deal with a murdered member; they have been suffering from a string of thefts and a stalker. Jane and her best friend, Cordelia Thorn, must find a murderer as well as keep the members of Kappa Alpha Sigma safe.

HALLOWED MURDER deals with an issue many people are forced to face - their own sexuality. For most people, college is the first opportunity they have to be free from parental constraints. Those curious about homosexuality use this opportunity to experiment. This book does deal with the issue of homosexuality for both the girl involved and her parents. While this by no means is an equal explanation of all of the problems, it does demonstrate a lot of confusion felt by all college students in general.

The mystery itself was not terribly complicated; however, it did take the entire book to piece together the clues. Jane is an interesting character. She seems to have a history that is unusual; however, none of this is fully developed. This oversight is most likely due to the fact this is a first novel in addition to this being the first book in a series. While certain elements of the book - porn movies and murder - were unexpected, the book remains a cozy.

HALLOWED MURDER is the first Jane Lawless mystery. St. Martinıs Minotaur is slowly reissuing those currently out of print.
