When Marc Girard returns to Toussaint, Louisiana, he wants to find some answers about his long lost sister. First, he meets with a pastor and then he sees Rebecca OšBrien. Reb (Rebecca) and Marc have met before and have shared a past. Now they are back together in the same room. Things have changed from those college days; she is a medical doctor and he is an architect.

They talk about a young woman, named Bonnie Blue, who met her death from an accident. At least, that was what it was termed. Marc wonders if this woman was really his sister who he had not seen for so long. Bonnie had been a drug user and a singer at one of the local night joints. Two murders prior to Bonniešs death give some additional fire that this may be a pattern.

The townspeople certainly are not pleased about the thought that Marc Girard is back in town. His family owns some of the town and there is a deep resentment. Most people think he has come back to mess up their lives and disrupt their business.

The characters in this book are many. Some of the more fascinating ones are Spike, Chauncey, Precious, Oribel, and Madge. Spike is a deputy who is sick of lowlifes and degenerates. Chauncey could be considered a lowlife. He is married to Precious and you know from the beginning that these folks would not be candidates for the couple you would want to have living next door to you. Oribel works for the pastor; she is an opinionated bristly little woman whose husband ran away with someone else. Precious is her daughter. Madge is the pastoršs assistant and if life were different, their relationship would be on another level.

When Rebeccašs life is threatened and her beloved dog is also in danger, she knows that someone is trying to scare her. The fear part of the equation is working, although she needs to continue with her work in the community and her patients are depending on her. There is a man in jail who has been accused of murder. Is he really the murderer?

This story contains just enough suspense and just enough romance to heighten the desire to read this book to the finish without putting it down.
