Lew Fonesca has settled in Sarasota, Florida after the death of his wife. He currently works as a process server and occasionally investigates missing person cases. Reverend Fernando Wilkiens would like Fonesca to find William Trasker.

There is currently a huge debate over whether Midnight Pass should be opened or left closed. There are several arguments both for and against the issue. Wilkiens is a powerful member of the black community and would like the pass to remain closed. According to him, Wilkiens is dying of cancer and as a final gesture plans on changing his vote to support Wilkiens' movement. This vote is all that is needed to keep the pass closed. Wilkiens has disappeared and without his vote, it will remain a tie.

Fonesca quickly learns that people will stop at nothing to resolve this conflict including kidnapping and murder. The race is on and Fonesca must find Wilkiens before this innocent man disappears forever.

MIDNIGHT PASS has an interesting cast of characters. Fonesca is well drawn and has obvious human frailties. He has not completely recovered from the senseless death of his wife -- she was killed in a hit and run -- and cannot quite fit into normal society. He is very serious and has his own sense of right and wrong. The other characters in the book are just as developed. Sally is a single mom working as a social worker and wants to save all of the lost children as well as Fonesca. Even William Trasker is a spunky character. Trasker is not a player in the book until the end; however, from others' reactions to him, he is obviously strong-willed and independent. Kaminsky's ability to create interesting characters is noteworthy.

MIDNIGHT PASS is the fourth book in the Lew Fonesca series. Stuart M. Kaminsky has over forty books to his name.
