Tom Hartley is unmarried, living at home taking care of his widowed mother and trying to keep the inherited family printing business solvent. On the commuter train he happens to sit across from Laura Hodges who seems to be working on a deal for Cartmann Systems. He uses this as a tip to buy the stock and makes a killing. He notes a few days later an obituary for Laura which states she has died after a short mysterious illness. Tom finds that difficult to believe and is sure there is more to the death than is disclosed. He begins to probe deeply into Laura's life.

Detective Julian Palmer, needing a break from her homicide career, undertakes an insurance investigation into the mysterious death of Laura and of a renegade inventor in the New Mexican desert who was connected to her. Tom and Julian join forces to try to determine what the mystery connected to Laura's death really signified. Is there a legitimate financial undertaking or is this all part of an elaborate scam to defraud the investors of Cartmann Systems and Laura's own investment firm?

The plot is extremely complex, combining the financial world, insurance, investors and murder. The characters are developed fully with Tom's ties to his mother, Laura's devious methods to obtain power and money and Julian's desire for truth and love. The course of the interest between Julian and Tom continues at a smooth pace with its outcome perhaps in doubt. The story is full of twists and turns leaving the reader unsure until the surprising end.
