Kali O'Brien is having a bad day. Some unpleasant man was hitting on her at a bar, and her rescuer turns out to be a stalker. If that's not uncomfortable enough, her dinner date stands her up. The next morning Kali is upset and worried, but this quickly turns to guilt, when she learns Annie was murdered the day before. Annie's body was found scantly clad and posed after death. Annie's husband receives a yellow rose and a poem the morning after the murder, which scares Kali. This is the MO of the Bayside Strangler, who was put to death a month before. This death penalty case was huge and she helped prosecute the Strangler. Did they put the wrong man to death?

Although Kali has spent the last couple of years working as a defense attorney, she agrees to go back to the DA's office to investigate this new murder. Then another victim is found. Again the body was found in the same way and there is another rose and poem. Kali remains confident that the Bayside Strangler was put to death and that this is merely a copycat killer; however, she must find the killer before time runs out. With the help of police detectives Lou Fortune and Bryce Keating, Kali must find another serial killer before San Francisco erupts with panic and anger.

Serial killers have an unexplainable fascination. Whether it is due to their total disregard for other people or their psychological disarray is unknown; yet, most people are morbidly captivated. Jacobs takes the general appeal of serial killers to the next step. She questions what would cause a killer to imitate the style of another killer. Most serial killers get something specific emotionally from their murdering; do copycat killers get the same thriller?

COLD JUSTICE is a fast paced quick read. Kali O'Brien is a smart and driven heroine. Like most heroines, her personal live is a mess; however, unlike some, Kali is completely aware that it is her own fault. As seen by Kali, most of the characters are well developed and are not stock characters. Although Fortune and Keating both are superficially the typical detective partners, they do have some hidden depth.

COLD JUSTICE is Jonnie Jacob's fifth book.
