Maggie Kelly becomes a mystery writer when her career as a historical romance writer becomes unproductive. She creates her lead character, amateur detective, Alexandre Drake, Viscount Saint Just, the perfect man. She also creates for him a sidekick, Sterling Balder. These characters make her a best selling author. By some quirk of fate the two men come to life in her apartment.

There Saint Just takes charge, and signs them up for the forthcoming Romance Writers Conference. Maggie is reluctant to go, but is prodded by Saint Just who is to enter the best cover contest. In the midst of the chaos of the convention the publisher of a leading romance magazine is found murdered in an elevator. Maggie and Saint Just join forces with Detective Steve Wendell, with whom Maggie is beginning to have a romantic relationship, to find out who the murderer is.

This is an in depth portrayal of romance conventions with its ambitious writers, its conniving colleagues and its publishers. It is in turns satirical and tongue-in-cheek. It is a really revealing treatment of the methods of publishing, reviewing and writing romance novels. There is a wealth of zany characters with clever, witty and funny dialogue, and delightful descriptions.

This is a book not to be missed by any romance, historical or Regency novel reader.
