This abridged CD offers nine hours on 8 CD's about former President, John F. Kennedy. It is a good source for someone who wants to have an overview. The one thing that makes this source different from previous works about Kennedy is the in-depth information about medical issues that plagued our former president.

From the time that John F Kennedy was three years old, he always had illness challenges. Raised in a family that had a high priority for public appearance, John learned that his countless episodes of medical problems must be downplayed. A diagnosis of Addison's disease kept the President on dosages of injections and medications. Kennedy continued to live as the picture of health when in fact, he was not. The medical information is the primary difference between this story and so many others about JFK. There have been countless books, audios and articles written about the Kennedy dynasty.

A new breed of celebrity politician, Kennedy came to presidency power in 1960. His supporters saw him as a sign of youth, hope, health and enormous charisma. The challenges facing this man were his moneyed family, his reputation with women, his possible connection with the Mob, his health and concern about his Catholicism.

Former Bostonian mayor Honey Fitz (Jack's grandpa) is the man who tried to discourage the relationship between his daughter, Rose, and Joe Kennedy. Joe was a man who had personal fears, a workaholic, who wanted to accumulate wealth.

He was a first time millionaire before he was 35 years old. Their union created nine children over seventeen years. Joe loved the thought of a large family and the author points to the fact that this may have given him extra attention from others outside the family. Jack's first ten years are filled with memories of Grandpa Fitz, illness and reading. College showed Jack being very successful with women and making friends. Jack's older brother, Joe, was expected to be the President of the United States by his family. Joe's death devastated the family and quickly taught Jack many lessons of how to deal with suffering and pain in public. This would be tested time and time again. One of the jabs that was voiced by non-Kennedy supporters was that Joe Kennedy would buy the White House for one of his children.

Reminders of the Inauguration mentioned Marian Anderson singing and Robert Frost reading. The now famous statement given at the speech was "Ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country."

Cuba, Vietnam, The Cold War, Civil Rights, The Soviet Union and the relationship with Nitika Khrushchev are key to this tape. It looked like Kennedy needed to visit Florida and Texas in November, 1963 in order to raise campaign funds and win votes. The country was shocked into grief and horror when John F. Kennedy was dead!

Forty years later, this President's name will spark conversation. However you feel about the former John F. Kennedy, this oral version will give you food for thought.

Reader Richard McGonagle is pleasant with the exception of the accented Kennedy family speech which is a bit flat.
