It's the hot summer of 2059 in New York City but police Lieutenant Eve Dallas is cheerier than usual. Her nemesis, factotum and surrogate father to her rich husband, Roarke, has finally been persuaded to take a 3 week holiday. Unfortunately, Eve's desire to have him out of the house for a while, is thwarted. The cat gets underfoot, causing Summerset to fall down the stairs and break his leg.

Then, Dallas gets a phone call from her news anchor friend, Nadine, who has just gotten a tip that there was a dead girl found in a dumpster downtown. The body of a once beautiful 20 year old Columbia student is found. Posed photos had been sent to Nadine. Then the body was dumped in the skip. This is just the first of a series of murders. In each one, a carefully posed, post mortem photograph was sent. Someone is killing young people to "steal their light"

Meanwhile, Roarke is on a quest of his own. He has been told something of his parentage and he shuts Dallas out while he searches for his mother, both on the internet and by making a trip to Ireland.

For those fans of the series, all the usual suspects are brought back. Besides Dallas, Roarke, Summerset and Nadine, we have Mavis and her coterie, entertaining Summerset when Eve cannot bring herself to do so, and Eve's puzzlement at being cut out of Roarke's life for the first time since their marriage. This is a satisfying addition to the long running series.
