Sophie Greenway and her husband Bram Baldric own the Maxfield Plaza hotel in St. Paul. He is also a radio personality while she is also a restaurant critic. Returning family is a major theme in this book: Bram's daughter Margie comes to live in hotel and Sophie's parents, Henry and Pearl Tahtinen, return from a couple of years traveling the world.

Before Pearl returns, Sophie finds a diary talking about Pearl's feelings for Carl Vreeland and the events that happened the night he died so many years ago. Sophie is good friends with Elaine Vreeland, daugher to Carl and his wife Millie. Elaine's daughter Tracy is an unhappy young woman, and it turns out she was sexually abused as a teenager. She tries to commit suicide the same night Millie Vreeland dies. Millie's death turns out to be murder. All of these strands of events eventually come together in tragedy.

Ellen Hart is an experienced writer, with several other books in the Sophie Greenway series as well as several books in the Jane Lawless series. Her experience shows in smooth writing and complex characters. In this book both Sophie and her mother, for example, deal with loving other men while still loving their husbands. Elaine deals with her attraction to men who are jerks, while dealing with her daughter's trauma. Bram deals with the tension between Sophie and Margie. All are handled by the author with sensitivity and grace. Death on a Silver Platter is a recommended work in a recommended series.
