With a view to adding a discreet gift shop and rest room to the site, the Stone Harbor (Massachusetts) Historical Society has asked Emma Fielding and her students to conduct an archeological dig at the 18th century Chandler House. Emma is glad to take this on, since she and her husband, Brian Chang, have recently bought a house in a nearby town, and this means that Emma will be saved her normal long commute.

A young security guard, Justin Fisher, is thinking of doing graduate work in history, and Emma has been trying to convert him to archeology. One morning, Emma finds him murdered near her dig site.

The sniping and backbiting among the Historical Society members runs as an undercurrent throughout this, the third in the Emma Fielding series. Back in the US after a vacation/study trip to England, Emma is once more uncovering the 18th century beginnings of the US Northeast, scraping away at the ground and inch by inch learning about those colonial settlers.

Emma begins to pay more attention to the descendants of those who built the big houses in town, when there is another murder, and she finds the tangled genealogy of an old New England town has much to do with both deaths.

I think that those who objected to the author's sendup of British archeological techniques in GRAVE CONSEQUENCES will find this one more to their liking. It is more like the first in the series, SITE UNSEEN.
