Last year, Mark Billingham chilled unsuspecting readers with SLEEPYHEAD, an exciting and unusual thriller where the crime was unique as well as the characters involved in the story. Solving the case took a toll in the life of Detective Inspector Tom Thorne. Now, he is back to do it all over again.

Two cold-blooded murderers are performing a serial killer duet. They work in unison, far from each other, working on their own gruesome crimes, and at the same time taunting the police. At first, they think that it is one individual committing all the crimes, but when the police learn differently, the cops are in full-alert working hard to avoid a panic. The deaths are almost perfect, leaving little clues and almost nothing to work on. Tom Thorne is good at what he does and manages to find a connection and he will be relentless. What he is unaware of is that one of the killers is watching the DI's movements rather closely. Thorne needs to solve the case rather quickly, otherwise, there will be more shocking murders and someone close to him may be in jeopardy.

It is hard to upstage what Billingham did with his amazing last novel, but he tries his best. He does not permit readers to get comfortable by making them challenge their own perceptions by being rather clever. A perfect example of this is found in the novel's prologue. His main strength is with character development by focusing on the lives of some of the troubled detectives regarding their own personal lives as well as their demons. The ending seemed a bit rush and the killer acts a bit out of character; however, Billingham has proven himself as a good suspense novelist. SCAREDY CAT is worth searching for and an interesting whodunit. So, what's stopping you? Why are you afraid? Try this English writer today.
