This is a story about Johnny Peterson and his family and friends. Johnny is seventeen years old. It appears that he has the world! He is an athlete with an incredibly bright future at college. Becky was his girlfriend; no doubt there was marriage in their future. Then, as sometimes happen, a horrific event occurred and five bodies later, Johnny was dead.

Johnny had two siblings, Bobby and Charlotte. Bobby had not spoken in five years. Charlotte was a natural athlete but she was in a precarious situation; her older brother was dead and her brother was a mute. Somehow, a person in this situation can get lost. Charlotte craves attention from her dad.

I cannot imagine what these parents were feeling and how great was their suffering. The parents, Alice and Jim, each dealt with this loss in their own way. Grief encompassed this family and his sweetheart, Becky. This took many faces of depression, fear and sickness. Alice had been Johnny's biggest fan. She adored her oldest son. Unfortunately, Jim continued and heightened his drinking. This was the way he escaped.

When Alice becomes quite ill four months after Johnny died, everyone is scared once again. There in the hospital room, she dreams and talks to her deceased son. Alice and Bobby are the only two people who can see Johnny. They can each talk to him and also listen to him. They are the only ones who can communicate with him, because they are the two that need him the most.

Discovery, magic and miracles are all part of this story. Mending and healing are two themes that wind throughout this family. Alice believes that Johnny's appearance brings some small amount of goodness and normalcy to this family. Sometimes, she wonders if things will ever really be manageable again and how long Johnny will remain to help them through his loss. Another theme that is present in this story is that we need to let go sometimes. A surprise ending is here for the reader.

This is Danielle Steel's 58th novel and this audio is read by Joseph Siravo.
