In a split second, a person's life can be forever altered. Eight years prior, Secret Service Agent Sean King was protecting Clyde Ritter on the campaign trail. An assassin killed the candidate and King killed the assassin. Even though, there were two men that actually died, King also died in his own way. His life was never the same. As the story starts, King reads about another secret service agent, Michelle Maxwell, who has encountered an equally awful experience. Maxwell, a 9-year agent, was thrown for a loop when the person she is protecting is kidnapped. John Bruno was running for the U.S. presidency. Someone who identified herself as the widow of Bruno's former employer had called Bruno. She asks him to come to the funeral home and talk to her. When he went to the funeral home, he disappeared.

Maxwell's dilemma brings back memories for Sean, as he sees her being chastised by the press. He knows that she is their secret service scapegoat now. King has left the service and finished his law degree, hoping to leave behind the memories. Unfortunately this doesn't happen. Once again Sean King is behind the eight ball, when he walks into his law office and sees a dead body. Not previously known to King, the victim was in the witness protection program. One of the suspects for this murder is King.

Michelle Maxwell and Sean King have the common denominator of each being fallen agents. They team up together after one of the key witnesses is murdered. When too many bodies appear and clues point to one or both of the main characters, they realize they need to take care of business. Murder, blackmail and not always knowing who is telling the truth will keep you involved until the very end of the story.

It is no surprise to me that David Baldacci sets out to give his readers a delectable, twisting adventure. Baldacci, a master with disguise and red herrings tells us just enough. Short crisp chapters add to this attraction. Enjoy!
