Amy Gray, so the reader is told, worked first in publishing then later as a private investigator in New York City. Just what she is engaged in at the present time is left to one's imagination as I was unable to find any further information about her despite searching the Net. Since no other book is listed, I assume Spy Girl is her first. The author claims the characters and events of the book are real although she has changed situations, names and incidents. Make of that what you will.

There is no plot, as such, to this book. It is a series of anecdotes strung together against the background of the author's work as a PI in what is described as a very seedy office. From the author's point of view, her romantic misadventures take precedence over her cases. She manages to get herself into uncomfortable situations in both aspects of her life.

The book could have been entertaining. There is a good basis for an engaging romp. This has been spoiled by, to put it mildly, inadequate editing. The author, in the first few chapters, swings uneasily between past and present tenses for no perceivable reason other than carelessness. Adequate editing could also have polished the vocabulary and grammar of the neophyte author.

Perhaps Ms. Gray will seek to publish further adventures in a different sphere. We can but hope she finds more editorial help than was apparently available for this opus.
