Fourteen years ago, Matt Lindstrom's wife, Gwen, disappeared, leaving him under suspicion of having murdered her. Though there was no body and no evidence, her continued absence led to the ruin of his comfortable life in Minnesota. Unable any longer to bear the sideways looks and gossip, Matt finally upped stakes and relocated to British Columbia, where he has begun a charter boat business and found a certain measure of peace. All of which is shattered when he receives an anonymous phone call, telling him that Gwen is still alive and living as łArdis Coleman˛ near the ominously-named town of Cyanide Wells, California. Worse, the caller informs Matt that Gwen knows perfectly well what wreckage she has caused in his life. It doesnąt take Matt long to head for California with some kind of retribution in mind.

Once there, he discovers that his ex-wife is a Pulitzer prize-winning journalist with the local paper, a mother, and living with the owner of the paper, Carly McGuire in a lesbian relationship. Soon enough, she disappears again and he and Carly become partners in a quest to uncover what she is up to and, more pressingly, who she really is.

Not part of the Sharon McCone series, but like the earlier Point Deception, a stand-alone set in Northern California, Cyanide Wells is more a psychological puzzle than a conventional mystery. Technically accomplished, as we might expect from this author, what is most interesting here is the relationship between the two principals, Matt and Carly, which develops from wary suspicion to ultimate trust and cooperation. Whether fans of Sharon McCone will applaud this departure is an open question, but there is much here to please the discerning reader.
