Detective Chief Inspector Alan Banks is resting on a beach in Greece when he hears that a the body of a boyhood friend, who disappeared during the summer of 1965, has been found back home in Peterborough. Banks, always a bit introspective, starts thinking about that time, and figures he should go home and see if he can "help the police with their inquiries"

Simultaneously, another young man goes missing in Banks' district, and D. I. Annie Cabbot is assigned to the case of Luke Armitage,, whose stepfather is a famous ex-footballer, Martin Armitage, and whose mother is ex-supermodel, Robin Feathering. Luke's real father was a rocker who had committed suicide. Robinson takes us through both investigations, and through Banks' memories of the summer of '65, while Annie follows the current disappearance.

The book moves with Robinson's usual deliberate pace. We learn as much about the investigators and about the investigation. THE SUMMER THAT NEVER WAS or CLOSE TO HOME is not up to the level of IN A DRY SEASON, but that will be a hard one to beat.

Ron Keith is the reader on CLOSE TO HOME. Perhaps part of my problem with this audio book was that his tone of voice and accent didn't match the voice in my head. However, I would not have had time to read this book and didn't want to miss it, so the audio version was very welcome.
