Herman Strockmire is a lawyer championing environmental protection and anti-government actions. In addition to his political beliefs, he is a firm believer in conspiracy theories. Strockmire even has his favorite conspiracy website. These beliefs make it difficult to take him seriously. He is also suffering from an arrhythmia, which forces him to spend time in the hospital. In RUNAWAY HEART, Strockmire has found himself an actual conspiracy that he can prove. One of his employees (read computer hacker/ detective) is found dead; his limbs torn from his body. This type of damage is both bizarre and difficult to produce. This is obviously the work of a genetic mutant created to protect the world and government secrets. The government has created the ultimate warrior; a test tube warrior. It has not family so no one will mourn it’s loss. Most importantly that means military funerals will become outdated. Strockmire must find these secret mutants and prove to the world that they exist.

RUNAWAY HEART is read by Tony Plana. Plana did have amusing voices that seemed to fit each individual character. He has a nice deep reading voice that is enjoyable to hear. At times, the book did feel as though it was dragging. Whether this is the result of the book itself or the reader is unknown; yet, this was a major problem.

The book had some obvious flaws. Some of which were easier to overlook than others. One that was a large problem was that characters provided more information than they were legally allowed to. For example, the campus police provide both a description of a car and the license plate. Although they would likely provide the name of a car’s owner if someone provided that information, they would not give it out to someone who was clueless. If campus police do give out that type of information to anyone who calls them, that campus would not remain very safe for the students.

RUNAWAY HEART felt like a bad X-Files episode. The book sounded very dry and it was difficult to follow the plot. The plot itself sounded interesting. Cannell does have great ideas; unfortunately, the follow through was lacking.
