Paul Fisher is a teacher in a small college in Maine, He has just been through a nasty divorce; is separated from his two sons, and is undecided about his future. He had recently returned from Oregon's Rogue River Valley. There is a breakin at his college office and at his home. The only items stolen are his records of his research in Oregon. Then he is attacked for no apparent reason.

When he learns that Pam Livingston in Oregon who is claiming inheritance to the Baker fortune is threatened, and that Nora Ryan who is working with Pam is viciously attacked, he feels he must return to Rogue River Valley to set the record straight.

Together Paul and Pam unite in an uneasy collaboration to try to find who is so desperate to find the truth about Kate Baker's hidden fortune. They search into the past lives of the three Baker women to try to discover what there is in the past that would cause this mayhem now. Nora is being intimidated by an unknown man when there is a break in at the Baker Museum.

The suspense is kept at an even pace, revealing the buried secrets of the three Baker sisters. The characters are explored in depth with their agendas which disregard the consequences. The writing style is realistic and smooth. The author has successfully evoked the spirit of the past of the area.
