Alafair Burke, daughter of well-known writer James Lee Burke, has entered into the mystery writers' arena as a contender all her own. She brings to her novel "Judgment Calls" the skills and experience she acquired while serving as a former district attorney in Portland, Oregon.

As the story begins we meet Deputy District Attorney Samantha Kincaid of the Portland Oregon office. She has been presented the case of Kendra Martin a thirteen-year old, drug addicted prostitute. Kendra has been pulled into a car while walking along a street in Old Town, she was taken somewhere else, raped, sodomized and brutally beaten by two men. She is then dumped in the Columbia Gorge and left for dead. Fortunately a group of partying teenagers discover her and call for help.

First to arrive on the scene is the Major Crimes Team because she appears to be mortally hurt. When they realize that she is not as injured as originally thought they are reluctant to relinquish the case. They go to Samantha to get a warrant for attempted murder. Just because Kendra is a prostitute does not give anyone the right to treat a thirteen old child with such brutality.

After Samantha spends some time interviewing and getting to know Kendra she realizes that life has given this child a raw deal. She is determined to work the system to get the child the justice she deserves.

Alafair Burke handles the description of Samantha's job with flair. It is easy to see that she has been there. She describes the intricacies of the job along with the day-to-day grind. I think we can safely say that another Burke is well on their way to the bestseller list.
