Former CIA agent and assassin Mitch Rapp has led an interesting life for the last few years. He prevented the Iraqi president to become a nuclear superpower; he saved the U.S. President during a hostage situation in the White House; and most recently, had his cover blown by an unscrupulous politician determined to ruin the President and newly-appointed CIA Director, Dr. Irene Rapp. Mitch unable to hold a grudge takes care of business and cleans everything up before starting his new life. He is now married to Anna Rielly, the White House correspondent for NBC news, whom he met in TRANSFER OF POWER. He never thought that he would ever fall in love and he is happy for the first time in a long while. Now, with his cover blown, he will work hand-to-hand with the CIA Director. Unfortunately for him, it is shudder- a desk job. He will have to adapt but it will not be something easy for him to do.

There are two global threats that Mitch will encounter in EXECUTIVE POWER. The first involves the rescue of an American family held hostage in the Philippines by Islamic extremists. A group of commandos walked into an ambush after someone in Washington leaked the operation to the terrorists. Mitch went through that once, and he will be darned if that were to happen again. The second involves a terrorist that goes by the name of David working with a brother of the Crown Prince. They are plotting the destruction of Israel for their own reasons and someone needs to stop them. Both of them could have been great stories, unfortunately, the resolutions are cookie cutter leaving one empty inside. What the author does instead is try to bring in some humor into the story by having some fun with his characters.

When Mitch gets shot during a second hostage rescue attempt, he knows he is in deep trouble. No, he is not afraid of his boss who told him clearly to oversee the operation from a U.S. ship off the coast of the Philippines, nor is he afraid of President Hayes. No. There is only one person this testosterone-filled macho man is afraid of and that is his newlywed wife, Anna. All one hundred and fifteen pounds of her. Mrs. Rapp feels like Superman's wife not knowing where her husband is at times wondering if he is ever going to come home. He promised he was not going to put her through that in SEPARATION OF POWER and he has broken his word. Just wait until he gets home. This is one of the few treats the reader can expect inside the book. The alliance she then has with Irene Kennedy is just priceless.

Compared to the other novels in Flynn's repertoire, this one is probably one of the weakest action-wise. It still entertains but readers sometime expect more after a good thing. The author has new parameters to play with regarding the characters so it is a work in progress. Hopefully, should they be back for more things might pick up with their next appearance.
