Scotia MacKinnon, a private investigator, lives aboard her 38-foot sailboat in the northwestern part of the United States. Her client, Chantal Rousseau, has retained her to search for her ex-husband, Forbes Cameron. Confiscating Chantal's investments and then fleeing, he sounds like a class act con man.

Chantal's former detective had been found dead and his papers had been burglarized. Scotia hears the first part of a soon to be established pattern. Many people who have information about Forbes Cameron have already or will soon meet with death or destruction.

Investigation clarifies that Forbes is British and married numerous times. His first wife had mysteriously died. The more that we learn, the more evident it becomes how much of a scoundrel this person is. His past showed active involvement in blackmail, theft and murder.

Even though Scotia doesn't particularly like her client, she does learn some interesting customs from Chantal and her mother. Chantal's mother told about the bride's fair. This Middle Eastern ritual hosts all the bachelors and young women who are old enough to marry. Mutual consent follows a man's interest; he clasps the hand of his intended. If the woman gives him encouragement and doesn't break the handclasp, the union is performed.

Chantal was aiding women in Muslim countries, women who were married and mistreated. Some of those women's husbands were with the al Qaeda movement, so no one knew if these men were dead or had disappeared. There was major abuse and kidnapping in many of these sad situations.

Just as these women were mistreated, so were all the victims of Cameron. Continuing in the search for this man of multiple names and locations, Scotia kept adding to his composite. Time sensitive, she knew she must work quickly in order to prevent more murders. Even though she was not one of the wives, her life was in danger.

This is the third in the series, the first two being Death on a Casual Friday and a Deep Blue Farewell.
