Before becoming an insecure pain-in-the-ass at Rosato & Associates, Mary DiNunzio worked at a prestigious law firm called Stalling & Webb. Her best friend Judy Carrier is also introduced in Lisa Scottoline’s debut novel first printed in 1993. These two characters have survived the passage of time and continue to appear in other novels by this Philadelphia author. Ms. Scottoline did something that was rare to find in a courtroom drama – a sense of fun, a sense of humor. Beat that, Mr. Turow.

In her first (and perhaps only) time narrating a story, Mary DiNunzio shares her family life with her reader and mentions her fears that someone appears to be following her. She does not know whom to trust because all her leads point to the law firm. The last thing she wants is to bring any attention to herself and she cannot afford to lose her job.

The story, at times, is a bit predictable but as a first time novel, the story works out well. Having Mary as the narrator helps the story to move along and give it a sense of realism. The story is straightforward without going over the top. It is always a pleasure to see a character evolve from the very beginning and Mary DiNunzio is a treat. Judy Carrier is also a great character and you will get to see more of her in other books such as THE VENDETTA DEFENSE. Right now, this is Mary’s book, hence the title. Sit back, relax and enjoy the show.
