When two skeletons are discovered during an archeological dig in the gardens of Earlsacre Hall, Detective Sgt. Wesley Peterson, one-time archeology student, would love nothing more than being able to poke around the dig. But Wes has more pressing problems; a body has been discovered in an old trailer on the grounds of a holiday trailer park. And now a local solicitor has gone missing, after calling Wesley and telling him that he need to speak to him about an urgent matter.

Wes decides to accept an invitation to play on the police cricket team when they play the Earlsacre team, finding this a perfect opportunity to nose around the dig. Imagine the dismay of the police team when another body turns up in the woods ñ only this time it is the missing solicitor.

Wes and his boss, Detective Inspector Heffernan, quickly come to the realization that the murders are linked and that its possible they have something to do with the dig at Earlsacre Hall, where yet a third skeleton has been uncovered. In the meantime, Wesí old college mate, Neil, has become interested in the history of the Hall and the bodies buried in the garden. He shares his findings with Wes, and ultimately it is discovered that the present day murders and the 17th century killings have many similarities.

There are at least four other books in this series with Wesley, all of them with an archeological background. Wesí superior knowledge in this area is a benefit to him in solving the crimes(s) both current and historical. The books are gentle cozies, set in a small English town, with minimum violence and a good puzzle. Wesley and his family are charming characters and the books are highly entertaining.
