Fran Varady has a home, a job and a lead part in The Hound of the Baskervilles, being the current production at Fran's local pub, where Freddy the landlord is inordinately proud of his record as a theatrical entrepreneur.

All, however, is not as sanguine as it sounds, rehearsals are not going too well, Ganesh is not very keen on his part as Dr Watson, and even less keen when he learns that a real dog is to be part of the proceedings.

Fran's job at the new Pizzeria San Gennaro, formerly the Hot Spud Cafe, is causing her some unease, but she cannot quite put her finger on the cause of her unease. Reekie Jimmie the proprietor of the aforementioned Hot Spud Cafe has remained in the new business as manager, but he doesn't seem to actually do anything. The food is good and the business seemed to be doing well, but it doesn't feel right to Fran. But not enough for her to leave and accept Susie Duke's offer for Fran to join her in Duke's Detective Agency. She does however, agree to driving lessons, with disastrous consequences.

When a young lad turns up at the pizzeria asking to see Max, Fran is intrigued as there is no Max on the premises, but the boy is adamant that he has seem Max there, and not as a customer. She agrees to help the boy who is seeking his brother, both having entered the country illegally, through an organisation of which said Max is a part.

Before Fran has completed her plans to track down Max, she is witness to a horrifying death, and then finds herself up against very dangerous people who traffic in human life. But what has this to do with the Pizzeria?

This is the fifth book in the series and I find Fran very refreshing, she is changing as her circumstances change and that makes her very real and believable. It was good to meet up with Ganesh again who continues to unsuccessfully attempt to keep Fran out of trouble. There is a lot of subtle humour which I found struck just the right note.

Other books in the series are Asking For Trouble, Keeping Bad Company, Running Scared and Risking it All. Ann Granger is also the author of the Meridith and Markby books, of which there are 14 in the series. The most recent is entitled A Restless Evil.
