After having to deal with retired FBI profiler Terry McCaleb in A DARKNESS MORE THAN NIGHT, LAPD Detective Harry Bosch is ready to ring in the New Year in this Edgar-nominated novel. In CITY OF BONES, Bosch will be blindsided by several personal events in his life and will be forced to make some tough choices. Had he known what was coming, he probably would have stayed home.

On a hill near a residential Los Angeles neighborhood, a dog walker uncovers the body of a dead child buried over twenty years ago. There was evidence of premeditation and physical abuse of the body on the crime scene and the trail is getting cold. Bosch will be working this case with his partner Jerry Edgar and make the acquaintance of a rookie cop named Julia Brasher. During the course of the investigation mistakes are made causing a suspect to become a scapegoat. After having played a part in ruining this man’s life, Bosch pursues the investigation until he discovers the boy’s identity. Once he gets a name, he starts to look for the child’s relatives and finds a twisted family dynamic. They make the Tyrone family in Eugene O’Neill’s A LONG DAY’S JOURNEY INTO NIGHT seem like the Cleavers in the '60s television show LEAVE IT TO BEAVER. One thing you can take to the bank, there will be no happy ending.

The only recommendation for anyone looking to read this book is to watch out. If you are tired of being full of life and thinking that everything is going great, this novel provides the flip side. Authors can play god at any time with their characters and not fear retribution. It just seems that Bosch will never get a break. Don’t know what the latest LOST LIGHT will bring, probably more of the same.
