This is the fifth in Jeffery Deaver's impressive Lincoln Rhyme series, and may be his most intricate yet. A killer flees a homicide at a music school, locking himself in a classroom. Within minutes, he is surrounded, but a scream rings out, followed by a gunshot. When they break down the door, the police discover that the room is empty. Lincoln Rhyme and Amelia Sachs investigate, but the death toll is rising. Can they stop the killer before he takes more lives?

THE VANISHED MAN’ is a fast, interest read that introduces the reader to a world that is not only alien to the vast majority, but to Lincoln Rhyme as well. Whilst he can still work his forensic world, magic is something about which he has no knowledge and finds himself at a distinct disadvantage. For this reason, he has another assistant, a trainee magician called Kara, who quickly becomes one of the most interesting characters. It also shows the depth of research that Deaver has carried out in this field.

Deaver’s books are known for his twists and in this respect, THE VANISHED MAN’ does not disappoint. Deaver does his best to confuse, with the plot changing so much that the reader must concentrate at all times. However, there is the danger that Deaver may be using one twist too many, so that the reader becomes habituated to them and can predict them. However, there is still enough excitement and interest to make it a great read.

Once again, Deaver has written a very enjoyable tale that comes highly recommended.
