In the latest entry to the Alex Delaware series, a serial killer is targeting up-and-coming artist that are about to become successful in their respective fields. Detective Petra Connor is in charge of the investigation, but has no idea how to start. Baby Boy Lee was a down-and-out blues guitarist on the verge of a comeback. His dreams will come to an end one night when he is stabbed in a darkened alley.

Psychologist Alex Delaware gets involve once he is contacted by the police trying to reach his former girlfriend. Robin Castagna specializes in building and restoring guitars and Baby Boy was one of her clients. When another customer gets murdered, Alex gets further involved especially when his friend, Detective Milo Sturgis is working on a related case.

Anyone familiar with Kellerman’s series can sit back and enjoy the story. Even though Alex is no longer together with Robin, they are still close and going through new experiences. It is good to see the way things start to change. The killer in the novel is rather original even though there are several instances of incredulity, mainly the way the murderer encounters his victims. The biggest surprise in the book is the introduction of a new partner for Petra Connor shown here for the first time. Eric Stahl is a former military man who had worked top secret missions, but now is working for the LAPD. He is no-nonsense, good at his job, and an automaton. He makes Dragnet’s original Joe Friday seem like a wild and crazy guy at dance clubs.

Should you get the opportunity to listen to the unabridged recoding of A COLD HEART by John Rubinstein, you are in for the time of your life. He tells a good story and does a great acting job with most of the characters. His interpretation of Stahl is a killer, it’s terrific. Try it out today.
