Back from his astounding debut in OPEN AND SHUT, defense attorney Andy Carpenter is going to work on a personal case. His lover, Laurie Collins, has been arrested for murder. There has been animosity between Paterson Police Department Lieutenant Alex Dorsey and her. As a rookie in the force, she witnessed corruption performed by the lieutenant and she reported it to Internal Affairs. When nothing was being done, she quit and became a private investigator until working full time for Andy. Now, the burned and decapitated body of the lieutenant is found at an abandoned warehouse and Laurie is the prime suspect. Someone has it in for Andy's chief investigator and he will use all of his resources to save her. He may be a rich man, but he cannot afford to lose her.

The same elements found in OPEN AND SHUT can be seen in this new entry in the library of David Rosenfelt. Andy is an "aw, shucks" kind of guy who sometimes lets his newfound wealth and fame from the previous case get to him. His friends keep him grounded and they have no objection in ordering a chateaubriand at an expensive restaurant to make their point. Old favorites return including Tara, the dog wonder. It is a pleasure to read about them once again and the future looks bright. It is like they never left. FIRST DEGREE is full of action, humor, romance and surprises. It is highly recommended, however one caveat. You might want to read the first book before trying the second one. Hey, why not, it all ready out in paperback. This book continues some of the story lines from the previous book giving away several spoilers. If that is not a problem, and you want to have some fun are you in for a treat. Who said that no good stories come from New Jersey? They have not tried David Rosenfelt
