Self defense instructor Charlie Fox agrees to go to a club with her friend Clare Elliot. It's karaoke night and Clare takes on the reigning champ, Susie Hollins. Clare easily beats Susie, who then starts a fight. The next morning, Charlie gets a visit from a couple of cops. Susie has been murdered.

Since being discharged from the Army, Charlie has been giving self-defense lessons, mostly to woman, and hanging out with friends who also have motorcycles. She used to use a room upstairs from a seedy seaside nightclub in Morecambe, near Lancaster, but she got kicked out of that venue when the club was bought by new owners and refurbished and tarted up to become The New Adelphi, the very club that Clare and Charlie had gone to.

Charlie accepts a part time position in security at the club at the request of Marc Quinn, the new owner of the club. She is not accepted readily by the old crew, the leaders of which have worked for Marc for years. There is, however, something fishy in Morecambe.

This is a very polished work, even though it is a first novel. Charlie's back story is told with a minimum of fuss, we meet her friends, and even her family, and learn what happened to her in the army. I read RIOT ACT, the second in the series before I read this one, and can truly say that these can be read as stand alones or in any order. Sharp is an author to watch out for.
