Andy Carpenter is a lawyer worth $22 million. However, work is quiet at his office, until a dirty cop is found decapitated. There are three suspects originally, but they are soon narrowed down to one - Laurie Collins, Andy's PI lover and an ex-cop. When she is charged with murder, Andy wastes no time in taking the case and investigating, finds himself tracing a story from the days of Vietnam and coming up against the North Jersey mob.

FIRST DEGREE is a most enjoyable legal thriller and with its fast pace, is a novel that can be read in a very short space of time. Rosenfelt writes in a conversational tone, allowing the reader to absorb the plot developments without having to think too much about them. However, he has also introduced a large cast of characters, which can at times become slightly confusing.

Rosenfelt's plot is indeed intricate, with numerous false trails and a story that links back to Vietnam. Even though we do not see the meat of a John Grisham legal thriller, David Rosenfelt has written an exciting novel that can compete on an even field. Ideal as a summer read, FIRST DEGREE will grab the reader's attention from the beginning.
