HOME SWEET HOMICIDE was originally published in 1944. Since that date it has been honored many times. It made the Haycraft-Queen Cornerstone list was listed in James Sandoe's "Readers Guide to Crime" and Melvyn Barnes’ "Murder in Print". It was also made into a movie in 1946 starring Peggy Ann Garner, Randolph Scott, Dean Stockwell and James Gleason.

In this wonderful tale, Marian Carstairs is a former newspaper reporter who has been widowed at a young age. She is left with three young children to raise. She chooses to do this by writing four mystery novels each year under various pseudonyms.

With Marian so busy the young Carstairs children are often left to fend for themselves. They are really self-sufficient and seem to not suffer for it. There is April and Dinah the young girls of the family. Dinah is brainy while April is the pretty one. Archie is the youngest of the trio and also the banker. Archie always seems to have money, as he is wise in his handling of it.

When the neighbor next door is murdered the three children take this as the perfect opportunity to do a little publicity promotion for their mother. They feel if they can solve the crime and give Mom the credit it will greatly improve her sales and perhaps cut back on the time she has to work. If they just happen to do a little matchmaking and hook Mom up with a handsome police officer that is just one more benefit.

Although this book was first published in 1944 the story was wonderful. The plot was well thought out and the action moved along quickly. There were times that I felt myself yearning for a .25-cent malt with extra whip cream.
